In Ontario there is a graduated license system that one must follow in order to obtain their driver’s license. After you’ve passed a vision test and a knowledge test, you obtain your G1 driver license (which is the first of step in the rather lengthy process to achieving your G license).

Gaining your G1 is definitely cool, however it means that in order for you to actually get behind the wheel of a car, you need to a have a fully licensed driver – with at least 4 years of driving experience – with you at all times. After holding a G1 license for 12 months (eight months if you take – and pass – an accredited driving course), you’ll be eligible to take a road test and get a G2 license. The G2 has some restrictions, but it enables you to drive on your own. After an additional 12 months, you’ll be eligible to take a more challenging road test, which if you pass, means that at long last, you’ll graduate to a full G license.

Preparing for the test

Going to the testing center

The vision test

After asking you for your ID and having you sign some paperwork, the first thing you’ll do is take a vision test.

The knowledge test

When they call your name, you head over to the desk and they give you a test form and a pencil (with an eraser, which you’re permitted to use). There are two test sheets, each of which contains 20 questions. The first one is about the rules of the road, while the second set of 20 questions is about road signs.
You need to get at least 16 questions right on EACH of them in order to pass the test. If you get 15 right on one, and absolutely nail the second perfectly, you’ll still fail the test nevertheless and will have to take it again another day.

Your G2 road test can only be attempted after a minimum of 12 months.
However, if you take a Beginner Driver Education course through an Ministry-Approved B.D.E course provider like United Driver’s Training, your road test can be taken after only 8 months! After 8 months of driving practice, you can take your G2 road test if you successfully completed the course , which again can be achieved through taking the United Driver’s Training Safe Driver’s Course

• The Driver’s License History provides proof of successful completion of and graduation from BDE course and is widely recognized by the Insurance industry as proof of course completion.

• BDE Graduates with a Driver’s License History may be eligible for an insurance discount.
Course consists of 20 hours in-class, 10 hours in-car and 10 hours of home link along with preparation for passing the road test.

In order to practice for this test,click here to read Driver’s Handbook.They cover rules and road signs, along with practice tests along the way. Questions on the test will come directly from the CD and/or handbook. Therefore, you should try to study the contents thoroughly and find a test centre closest to you. You must attain at least 80% on your vision test and 70% for the actual written test.

The fee for this test is $125.00 and an additional $10 if you fail and wish to try again.

Once you have acquired your G1, you are eligible to drive with someone who has at least four years experience. In order to drive by the rules, you need to have your license with you while you are behind the wheel. Otherwise, consequences will arise. Your G1 is valid for five years from the date of issue.

Your G2 road test can only be attempted after a minimum of 12 months.
